Penny rugs date back to the 1800s, around the time of the U.S. Civil War. Thrifty homemakers started using scraps of wool and felted wool from old clothes, blankets, and hats to make the rugs. The penny, and other coins, were used as templates to cut out the circles used to create the rugs. All supplies inlcluded.
