American, Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was thought to be one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. He is best known for the huge paintings he made by splattering, throwing, and dripping paint onto his canvases. His art is often called Abstract Expressionism, but he preferred to call it Action Painting. Preschool children are all about ‘action’ so we thought it appropriate they have the opportunity to experience the freedom of splattering. Four years ago, we channelled Pollock when the children threw paint on canvases using brushes. It was joyful (and messy) but this time we wanted to extend the experience using another of Pollock’s techniques. This year the children were excited to be able to hold the paint in their hands to throw it on their canvas. First, they used a palette knife to add a base coat of black acrylic paint to their canvases and it was set it aside to dry. Each child mixed two unique colours of acrylic paint for the next step. The joyful messy work was done in our homemade ‘paint booth’ made with the children who problem solved how to keep the paint off the walls, furniture and ceiling. Children used their fingers and sometimes their whole hands to dribble, throw and shake the acrylic paint onto their canvases. We all wore our art those days! The large canvas stood against the back wall of the paint booth while 78 nursery school children took turns throwing paint for their individual art work. Everyone wore the bright colours of paint but also huge smiles and a big sense of satisfaction! The Pollock Project II
